From Needs Assessment to Program Focus

This collaborative process, carried out through a structured needs analysis that brought together local stakeholders (music professionals, educators, and organizations), helped refine the program’s purpose from a broad vision into a targeted educational offering. It addressed precisely the challenges young professionals face when entering the industry. These discussions informed not only the course topics but also the format, and learning style of the program. As a result, the training became more tailored, relevant, and rooted in real-world needs.

Collaborative Curriculum Design and Expert Involvement

After evaluating the stakeholder survey, topics were prioritized, and professionals were selected to introduce each theme. These experts were briefed and coached in advance to adapt their content for a video learning format and for the language level of emerging professionals. The final curriculum spanned 30 short, focused video lessons, ensuring thematic diversity and clarity. The development process emphasized brevity, accessibility, and practical relevance, using audiovisual storytelling and clear structuring to engage learners more effectively than traditional academic approaches.

Pilot Execution: From Production to Platform

The implementation phase involved assembling a full video production team and partnering with the Riga Art and Media School. After 30 videos were filmed within five days, followed by several weeks of editing, adding animation and visuals. Experts were coached to speak clearly and connect with the young audience. Once completed, the videos were uploaded to YouTube and integrated into the Music Latvia website on a new learning portal, “Music Industry 101.” This phase was shaped by the importance of investing in audiovisual production quality and ongoing collaboration with technical partners to ensure sustainability and impact.

The pilot confirmed that free, well-structured content has long-term value for both formal education and independent learners.

The pilot had a visible impact on the local music ecosystem by introducing a new, accessible format of professional development. It improved visibility for local experts, provided free resources to students, and sparked dialogue around practical learning pathways in the industry. Music Latvia’s initiative is now seen as a leader in music business education nationally, and the format has generated interest from other creative sectors such as film & gaming industry, where professionals face similar challenges in building sustainable careers. This cross-sector recognition highlights the potential of the model to be adapted more broadly within the cultural and creative industries.

Finally, we recommend maintaining the “Music Industry 101” platform with regular updates and considering a hybrid model that combines videos with live Q&A or mentorship to strengthen engagement and feedback loops.
